Questions remain over Ward 33 water quality report

Cllr calls for independent water quality tests as residents continue reporting discoloured and foul-smelling tap water despite assurances.

DESPITE reassurances from uMngeni-uThukela Water that the water coming through the taps of Ward 33 homes is safe to drink, councillor Fran Kristopher has formally challenged the findings of the eThekwini Water and Sanitation (EWS) report giving it the all clear.

Citing a growing disconnect between official assurances and the lived experiences of residents across the areas affected, Kristopher has requested for “an independent, credible water quality assessment” to be done amid ongoing reports of irregularities in water colour, clarity, smell and taste.

“This independent testing will serve to either verify the municipality’s claims or highlight areas of concern that require immediate remedial action,” said Kristopher.

Reports of discoloured and sandy water flowing from taps have been streaming over the past two weeks. At the end of April uMngeni-uThukela Water issued a statement saying they have embarked on a rigorous algaecide treatment plan at the Wiggins Water Treatment Works, which is supplied by the Inanda Dam.

“This follows the detection of elevated levels of 2-methylisoborneol (MIB), a compound that occurs when there are elevated levels of blue and green algae in water. It can cause musty taste and odour in drinking water,” said the entity’s spokesperson Siyabonga Maphumulo.

He went on to say, “Despite the presence of the elevated levels of this compound in water, uMngeni-uThukela Water assures the public that its water remains safe to drink and has been tested in accordance with the highest quality standards.”

He reassured residents that since taste and odour concerns first emerged, uMngeni-uThukela Water has strengthened its treatment operations, including more frequent water filtration and enhancing monitoring.

Kristopher said while the latest EWS report seeks to reassure residents that water supplied through municipal systems is safe for consumption, serious concerns remain among communities who continue to report irregularities in water colour, clarity, smell and taste.

“Residents deserve absolute certainty when it comes to the safety of their drinking water. Trust in municipal services can only be restored through transparency, scientific verification, and consistent communication,” said Kristopher who has called for a transparent investigation.

“Further updates will be provided as the independent testing process progresses,” she added.
