FIVE suspects were arrested after Durban Central police recovered four firearms with allegedly filed-off serial numbers and 74 rounds of ammunition during an operation in the Durban CBD on Thursday (August 6).

SAPS Durban Central spokesperson Sergeant Zanele Khomo said members of the Durban Central Field Unit B Group were acting on information received from Crime Intelligence when they intercepted a vehicle linked to the alleged delivery of drugs in the city centre.

The officers were on duty monitoring the March and March (Laco) operation at foreign national-owned shops when they received intelligence about drugs being delivered in the CBD.

“The members acted on the information and proceeded to the corner of Joe Slovo and Queen streets, where they located a vehicle matching the description,” said Khomo.

Police searched the vehicle and its occupants, discovering that four of the five suspects were allegedly in possession of unlicensed firearms and magazines.

“The driver was in possession of an extended magazine. Four magazines had full live rounds of ammunition, totalling 74,” said Khomo.

She added that the serial numbers and identifying markings on the four firearms had allegedly been filed off. The five suspects, aged between 25 and 30, were arrested on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The vehicle allegedly used during the commission of the offence was also seized for further investigation. “All five suspects aged between 25 and 30 are expected to appear before the Durban Magistrate’s Court in due course,” said Khomo.
