EDITOR – The DA Human Settlements and Infrastructure Committee Caucus in eThekwini supports the ruling made by the chair of the committee to not allow and discuss any items from a department if the officials are not present.
The meeting of Human Settlements and Infrastructure which was held on 6 August 2013 saw all caucuses agree to hold officials to account. This ruling is supported by the DA as officials have in the recent months blatantly ignored the committee’s request to have an official present from every department at the meeting, which only takes place once every month.
The disregard by officials of this ruling has now hindered service delivery in certain departments as some items were not discussed because officials were not present to answer any questions or give any insight to the items. Politicians are given an oversight role to play and this cannot happen if officials do not attend meetings to which answers to questions need to be given.
To prevent this situation from occurring again, the DA urges either the Head of Department, a senior official or a representative from that department to attend standing committee meetings to ensure the roll out of services.
