EDITOR – In response to a query about an incident of pickpocketing that allegedly occurred in its Davenport branch, the Checkers supermarket chain said that such occurrences are always very unfortunate and that it empathises with the material losses that customers might have suffered.
However, it has no evidence that thieves are necessarily targeting that store specifically. All businesses across the country experience incidences of crime at one time or another.
The supermarket chain endeavours to provide a safe shopping experience for all its customers, and invests in security measures at a cost of thousands of rand per year to protect customers, its premises and stock as far as it is in its power to do so. Independent security companies are also employed by the chain, as in Checkers Davenport, and have had much success in apprehending criminals in stores.
Regrettably crime cannot be foiled in all cases and security staff cannot always prevent the theft of personal items. CCTV cameras also do not provide a guarantee that a perpetrator will be filmed in the act, or that they will be identified or caught. Security measures are regularly evaluated and adapted to fit the store’s requirements.
The supermarket chain is unfortunately not in a position to take responsibility for the loss of personal belongings in its stores, but does try to assist customers as much as possible in the store following such incidents. Customers need to remain cautious and cannot leave their personal belongings unattended at any stage.
