EDITOR – I hope this letter reaches the kind person who picked up my purse and handed in at the Berea Police Station.
On Monday afternoon I was shopping at the Pavilion in Westville and while I was trying on a pair of shoes I was distracted by 2 ladies chatting to me on my left side whilst another was stealing my purse out of my bag which was on the floor right next to me on my right . The incident was picked up by the store’s CCTV facility. I thought I was being a decent citizen by helping these ladies select and try on a pair of shoes, but they were nothing but thieves.
Having been a victim of crime three times in the last five months, including losing my husband to violent crime in a shooting incident to steal his briefcase, I was somewhat distraught at being “a victim” once again.
My purse was found in Musgrave Avenue later that day and handed in at the Berea Police Station and I am happy to report that all the criminals got away with was R50.
Not having to go through the process of renewing my license and re-applying for all my store and bank cards, etc was a huge relief. My sincere thanks to the caring, thoughtful citizen who found my purse and took the trouble and time to hand it into the police station. At a time when I am grieving the loss of my husband and losing all hope in this country it is good to know that there are still caring, thoughtful, law-abiding citizens out there, who choose to do the right thing.
