Lawlessness is the new mantra

A reader wants to know what eThekwini municipality is going to do to deal with the human and hygiene implications of homeless people.

EDITOR – There is a man who lives under his umbrella in Gladys Mazibuko (formerly Marriott) Road!

In rainy weather he might stay there for days, sleeping bag contraption over his legs. Perhaps he likes the quiet away from the shops. Where he toilets who knows.

Perhaps it is an improvement on the apartheid days. At least now the poor are visible, not hidden in the gammadoeles. All we who pass by on the other side are thankful for the few good Samaritans who dig deep into their pockets day by day. But is haphazard charity enough?

What is the plan of eThekwini municipality to deal with the human and hygiene implications of the many homeless seeping into our city?

Child beggars, all shapes and sizes hindering traffic and wandering between our cars against the bylaws. We used to be fined for jaywalking. Now it’s acceptable it seems.

People used to stop behind the white lines at intersections to protect those crossing over. Never a traffic cop in sight, many white lines smudged out, stop signs down, etc.

Oh dear! Lawlessness is the new mantra it seems: freedom run amok! Surely this cannot be humanly ‘right’?
