EDITOR – What will it take for eThekwini to notice the decaying Berea.
They seem to conveniently ignore empty houses being left to be taken over by squatters. Musgrave Road, Essenwood Road, the Cape Dutch home on Montpelier/Mugrave is showing the start of neglect. It only takes a drive around to see what is happening. Some of the homes being built lack any character – white boxes, glass, stainless steel and lots of lights.
I object strongly to commercial development on the Berea which was classified special residential, maximum three storeys. Did a change sneak in to allow commercial property?
Since the introduction of one way traffic Musgrave and Essenwood have become race tracks. Never see a speed trap which used to be seen “in the old days”. Why are there no speed humps? There are humps all over but not in these roads. It would certainly help the speeding. All the other areas where there are schools have humps.
I have lived on the Berea for most of my life (more than 60 years) and it is a crying shame to see what is happening.
