EDITOR – The picture of Mr Jack Spenser on page nine of the Berea Mail dated 9 May 2014 refers.
This photo also appeared in another publication to which I responded in a similar manner. It is irritating that a false impression is created and that the truth is distorted once again. It is simply impossible for Jack to have been at Glenwood Prep as this fine educational institution can only claim to have been established in 2003 as the history books will show.
The school established on that premises in 1910 was named Bulwer Park Government School. It changed its name to Park View School in 1941 when the Afrikaans learners carried their desks and chairs along Nicolson Road to the first Afrikaans only school in Durban to the present Port Natal School.
In 2003 Park View School changed its name to Glenwood Prep which in essence took on a new name, a new ethos, a new motto and changed the lyrics of the school song. A change of uniform was also introduced to identity this 'new' school (established in 2003 and not 1910) with the local high school.
Thus, if Glenwood Prep can claim to have been established in 1910, then Port Natal School should also date their establishment to 1910. They do not, they date themselves from 1941!
Thus, Jack Spencer is definitely not a former learner from Glenwood Preparatory but most likely an old boy of Bulwer Park Government School!
Why not simply accept Glenwood Prep is 11 years old!
