Misrepresentation of TAFTA

TAFTA urges people not to give to people who are going around stating they are collecting for the organisation.

EDITOR – It has come to our attention that individuals have been falsely presenting themselves as authorised TAFTA fundraisers.

In the most recent case a woman has approached would-be donors in the Hillcrest area with a letter apparently written on a TAFTA letterhead to the effect that they are raising funds for a TAFTA soup kitchen in the South Beach area of Durban.

No such fundraising campaign has been sanctioned by TAFTA and this notice serves to underscore that we take this matter very seriously and reserve all rights to respond appropriately in terms of the law: it undermines the trust and reputation which TAFTA has built within the greater Durban community over 57 years as an organisation that is dedicated to serving and improving the lives of Durban’s elderly citizens.

I urge the public not to make any donations to anyone making such false representation and set-out below the markers which will help you identify a genuine TAFTA fundraiser / fundraising campaign.

Collections by TAFTA take place at our annual Street Collection once a year and at awareness days throughout the year.

The street collections only take place at shopping centres upon the centre manager’s approval. Awareness days take place at schools, colleges, shopping centres and corporate venues.

The volunteers assisting with street collection and awareness days will display the TAFTA collection tin; a permission letter from the shopping centre, school, college or corporate place; an official TAFTA permission letter containing the Income Development and Public Relations Team contact details.

If you are approached by anyone seeking a donation who does not meet the above criteria, kindly report him or her to your to your local police station and contact Kevin Hayes or Nicolette Modicka at TAFTA at 031 332 3721.
