EDITOR – With reference to your page 3 article in the Berea Mail 9 October 2015, I was amused to read the North Beach residents complaining about an issue that us South Beach residents have had since 2010. Welcome to the club!
As a longtime South Beach resident, I have witnessed the demise of South Beach since the 2010 renovations, by opening a huge carpark stretching from (the old XL) Rutherford street in the south to West Street in the north.
Every afternoon and evening this carpark turns into a cesspit of revellers with no regards to the local signposted bylaws advertised by various signs in the area.
What people need to remember is that the Durban beachfront falls under the Seashore Act, which is a set of bylaws in addition to the normal common city bylaws.
All we really need is a diligent Durban Metro Police enforcing these existing bylaws, not bold media headlines of new bylaws been implemented.
The question will still be – will the Durban Metro Police change their mindset and act upon the contraventions of these new bylaws?
And, as witnessed at our UIP meetings, the top brass don't even know what the Seashore Act contents are.
Will the Durban Metro Police be informed of these new bylaws?
I will not hold my breath waiting to see if our Golden Mile by day and Golden Cesspit by night will be any better off.
Welcome to Dirtbin KZN.
