Vehicle renewal notices were part of the good old days

A vehicle owner feels the traffic department should continue to issue licence renewal reminders.

EDITOR – I am 81 years of age and bought my first vehicle, a motor bike, at age 21. For 60 years I have regularly received annual motor vehicle renewal of license notices, except this year. My, how thing have changed!

I had to pay a penalty of R90 for a month’s delay; this is not easy for a pensioner. Imagine how such penalties affect the less fortunate.

A man in the queue in front of me had to pay R900! The only reason he knew that his licence had expired was that his mechanic drew his attention to the fact that he was displaying a nine month old, expired decal.

I realise that the onus is on you to ensure your licence is current, but surely reminders must be sent. This was always the case in the good old days! In today’s digital age it would be easy for the licensing department to send out second reminders, in need.

Is this just another case of incompetent civil servants or perhaps a money making ploy?
