Elderly discriminated along political lines for Christmas, says DA

The Democratic Alliance calls on the Speaker to review the basis on which food hampers are distributed to the elderly.

EDITOR – THE Democratic Alliance in eThekwini will today write to the Municipal Speaker and ask him to intervene in the process of giving food hampers to senior citizens as part of the Municipality’s Senior Citizens Program for 2015.

The events and the food hampers which are supposed to be given to each guest at the end of each function are intended to be given to all elderly people in the Municipality. However, they are only given to ANC councillors to give to their supporters.

This is unfair as the elderly are discriminated due to political lines alignment.

Some of the elderly, despite their frail state, carry the burden of having to take care of their orphaned grandchildren. Why should they be denied these food hampers during this time of the year, when families gather around at Christmas time to share some treats? This is another example of a government that doesn’t care about the people.

The Democratic Alliance calls on the Speaker to review the basis on which these food hampers are distributed.

We will not allow this charitable gesture, which should be given to all, be undermined by the biased and uncaring ANC leadership in this Municipality.

Cllr Warren Burne

DA eThekwini Metro Councillor
