Amend National Prosecution Act

A reader feels the Democratic Alliance will be turning its mind to the next general election.

EDITOR – Now that we have all recovered from the excitement of the municipal elections one assumes that the DA will be turning its mind to planning for the big one, the 2018 general election.

Its prospects in this vital poll could be significantly improved if it declared its intention to suitably amend the National Prosecution Act so as to permit Gerrie Nel and his colleagues to appeal a High Court acquittal not only on a point of law but also on a point of fact where the court has accepted as reasonably possible a “cock and bull story” that flies in the face of common sense.

Spousal abuse (in the wider sense) is far too important a social ill in South Africa to allow this deficiency in the law to remain unreformed.
