Crime needs to stop

A reader says residents have had enough of crime, in response to the article "Refrain from taking law into your own hands."

EDITOR – I happened to watch the video referred to in the article, Refrain from taking law into your own hands, as it was posted on Facebook, and I did share it too.

About a year ago, one of our company vehicles was involved in an accident in Umgeni Road, a taxi skipped the traffic light and drove straight into the side of our truck. Our driver phoned me immediately to inform me of the accident that had just occurred and proceeded to tell me that because they wanted to get the taxi driver’s details, the taxi driver and his accomplices started threatening our driver and other staff members that were in our truck.

I immediately phoned the Metro Police number 031 361 000 and informed them of the severe situation and asked them to please get to the situation as speedily as possible. After half an hour, our driver phoned me back, after I had given him the Metro Police’s number too, so that he could report the incident, and told me that no one had arrived at the scene of the accident yet.

I then phoned the same number again, and asking them what the hold was, their response was “We have had no report of this situation and no one had been dispatched yet.” It took the Metro Police over an hour to get to the scene of the accident (after about five phone calls), which happens to be up the road from where the City Metro Police Station is situated.

Well what does a person do in this situation then?

Our company truck was written off by the insurance company and I had to take one of our staff members to Entabeni Hospital Outpatients due to the injuries incurred from the accident.

I firmly believe that most the South African public are getting to a point where we have had enough #CrimeNeedsToStop
