There’s a lesson in Trump’s win

A Berea resident gives his opinion on Donald Trump's win.

EDITOR – It turns out that Donald Trump’s somewhat unexpected victory in the US presidential election was not so unexpected after all.

Barack Obama’s presidency, particularly his first term, promised so much. The audacity of Hope. The promise of Change.

But he failed to deliver, and millions of Americans felt left out and left behind. They are sick of Washington and of the establishment. They feel betrayed and they are angry.

So angry that, despite Trump’s racism and bigotry and his obvious unsuitability for the Oval Office, substantial numbers of Obama voters either stayed at home or switched to Trump on voting day.

Trump’s victory is not just the defeat of Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party.

It is the trashing of any hope of an Obama legacy. Today, in the White House, Barack Obama’s dream of a new and changed America is in tatters. His promise of a new dawn was a false one. His legacy lies in ruins.

Despite the bigotry and awful racism of the Trump campaign, a sufficient majority of Americans rose up and voted to turn the entire system on its head. They didn’t all vote for the GOP either. They voted for Trump, they voted against the entrenched favouritism and political elites.

There is a serious lesson there.
