Dads cycle for charity
The Dads Charity Cycle Challenge has changed the lives of hundreds of schoolchildren.
WHAT started as a fun idea nine years ago over a couple of beers with a handful of spirited friends has now turned into a meaningful reality. Since its formation, the Dads Charity Cycle Challenge has significantly changed the lives of hundreds of schoolchildren along the route and has made some meaningful contributions to charity.
With the aim of raising R400 000 this year, funds raised will be divided predominantly between four charities namely The Sunflower Fund, Fulton School for the Deaf, the Gauteng Down Syndrome Association (DSA), and The CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation.
A portion of the funds will also once again be channeled to The Dad’s Charity Challenge Bursary, for a needy boy or girl to assist with furthering their education.
The Dads have also secured a donation of 2 million bricks from KC Energy (Pty) Ltd and this will assist in building classrooms for select schools, and other initiatives which are still in the pipeline. This programme will commence in 2014.
Commenting on this year’s ride, Rob Jackson, founder of The Dad’s Charity Cycle Challenge, says the group of 45 dads and a few moms will depart from Johannesburg on 9 October.
The Dad’s Charity Cycle Challenge will take place over five days. The team will cover 145km down to Standerton on the first day, followed by a further 134km to Newcastle on day two. The third day will comprise of a lengthy 165km cycle down to Estcourt and day four will see the team arrive in Pietermaritzburg after 118km.
The final leg will mark the culmination of the cycle challenge when the team will compete in the 106km Amashovashova from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on 13 October. The Amashovashova is the oldest ‘classic’ cycle race in the country, which follows the same route as the world famous Comrades Marathon.
“None of our core team are professional cyclists and all the participants will once again be paying their own expenses down to Durban. This ride would also not be possible without the support of our sponsors,” says Jackson.
Anyone wanting to lend their support to the riders can either contribute a specific sum or sponsor a rider per km cycled (668km in total).
Anyone interested in providing some form of sponsorship should please contact Rob Jackson directly on 011-463-7730 or e-mail him on info@leveragecorporation.co.za.
