SA champs to be crowned at Molweni

Entries are open for this year's Molweni Trail Run.

FOLLOWING the success of the 2014 Molweni Trail Run, the event has been awarded the SA Trail Championships for 2015.

The South African championship titles up for grabs will elevate the event, which is a two-day trail race with a 7km prologue on Saturday, 2 May and a 32km solo run on Sunday, 3 May.

New partners this year is the Durban Green Corridor which is extending its efforts and trail building network into the areas traversed by the runners. The linking of trails with the race route and the work done by Kloof Conservancy in the Molweni River Community Park makes perfect sense and adds value to the work done by them.

Anna da Graca, marketing manager at DGC, said: “The development of this event partnership was very natural and organic for two reasons. Firstly, Durban Green Corridor offers exceptional trail running routes along the Umngeni River Valley from Valley of a Thousand Hills to Inanda Dam and all the way to the Umngeni River Estuary. We are constantly seeking to build upon this network of trails. We welcome such an established and recognised trail running event in the valley. Secondly, and most importantly, we work directly with local communities in the valley to create opportunities for them through employment within the tourism, leisure and sports sectors. This event is a wonderful opportunity for the local communities to be involved and to benefit.”

New partners to the event include Skratch Labs nutrition, which will be the hydration supplier to the event, POC who will provide prizes for the winners of the prologue and Garmin SA who are providing mapping tools to the event. Another welcome contribution to the team has been the confirmation of partnership with global security giant G4S, who will contribute safety and security services ensuring all involved in the event are safe and sound at all times.

Additions to this year’s event include the addition of an 8km fun trail run on Sunday 3 May and an upgrade of the mini-Molweni, or race for the kiddies, ensuring there is fun and entertainment for the whole family.

All entries are done online at www.molwenitrailrun.co.za and will close once maximum field sizes have been met. Athletes of all ages and abilities are welcome. Three water points will be on route to look after the athletes along with full medical support from RescueTech and security from G4S.
