Celebrating heritage through sports

This was a coming together celebration of the heritage month and soccer development among our youth.

FIVE children’s homes around Durban participated in the first ever Heritage Soccer cup tournament at the City View Shopping Centre on Saturday. The tournament, hosted by the Durban Football Association (indoor soccer) in conjunction with LakeHaven Youth Care Centre, Child Welfare Durban and District, saw Lake Haven, William Clark Gardens, Malvern Children’s Home, St. Martin’s Children’s Home and Durban Children’s Home battling it out for top honors.

Reshina Steyn of Child Welfare said the tournament was a coming together celebration of heritage month and soccer development among the youth.

Steve Papini of Durban Central Football Association said it was a tremendous to see the kids participating in the competition. “Football was good even though some had never played structured football or even indoor football before which is totally different from outdoor. I hope it becomes an annual thing,” he said.

LakeHaven walked away with the first prize in the Under 17 category.
