KZN blind cricketers receive major funding boost

The SA Blind Cricket team calls on support and sponsorship as they head for the T20 World Cup in Pakistan. Their opening match is against the host nation on November 23.

THREE KwaZulu-Natal cricketers who play for the South African (SA) Blind Cricket team have received a major boost in funding from the KwaZulu-Natal Blind and Deaf Society (KZNBDS) as they prepare to leave for the T20 World Cup in Pakistan, from November 23 to December 3.

SA coordinator and president of the KZN Blind Cricket, Ndumiso Nyawose, alongside fellow teammates Luthando Naki and Sphelele Khalala, will leave for Pakistan on November 19 as part of the 16-man Protea squad. Their first match is on November 23 against the host nation, Pakistan, following the opening ceremony on November 22.

Nyawose, said they are “pretty confident” going into the T20 World Cup with financial burden for their trip eased through the sponsorship from KZNBDS. “In KZN we are fortunate that we get the support of KZNBDS. It has been great to have them on board because they do not only support the national team but the players in provincial teams as well as at club level. It shows how deeply entrenched the society is in supporting the team,” said Nyawose.

His sentiments were shared by SA Blind Cricket treasurer Manny Mothialal who extended his gratitude to KZNBDS. He hopes that blind cricketers could be compensated for playing the sport.

“Our players come from different backgrounds, some of them are scholars while some live on grants and are unemployed but are eager to play the sport. They even come to training having not eaten, without the right equipment and bare feet, but that is how much they want to play the sport,” said Mothialal.

He called on more sponsors and supporters to back the blind cricket team, as they take on international teams in the World Cup. “I would like for the sport to be recognised so that the players can earn a living from playing blind cricket,” added Mothialal.

KZNBDS president Veetha Sewkuran said every week is a struggle for the team and that they need support, more sponsors and donations. “The organisation’s sponsorship will aid the three players with their needs in Pakistan and make their journey to the World Cup more comfortable. The funds will help cover their expenses and whatever else they may need. It will also add to pocket money,” said Sewkuran.
