Heavy rains lead to cancellation of MTB and trial running events at Tour Durban

The organisers say safety was the overriding priority which prompted them to cancel the off-road events.

THE organisers of this year’s aQuellé Tour Durban MTB and the trail run races have been forced to cancel the events scheduled for Saturday, April 26 due to the recent heavy rains.

On Thursday, on the Tour Durban Facebook page, organisers said it was with ‘deep regret’ that they had made the decision.

“After the devastating flooding earlier this year, the course designers updated the courses, and together with landowners repaired infrastructure and damage on the new routes. However, when bridges were once again washed away this week, and there is more severe damage to the new course, it was agreed with safety consultants, race partners and landowners that in the limited time available, it is not possible to repair routes to a standard that would ensure a safe race for competitors and staff,” the statement read.

“The committee understands this is a huge inconvenience to everyone involved, including race entrants, event partners, service providers, staff and marshals, but safety has to be a priority and with great regret the committee decided to cancel the off-road events.”

The event also offered entrants different options to transfer their entries to other races.
