Caped crusaders to hit Durban promenade in 10km charity run

Runners are invited to suit up in red capes and hit the Durban promenade for a fun 10km charity run supporting Community Chest initiatives.

IN a run-up to the Comrades Marathon in June, Community Chest’s caped crusaders will paint the Durban beachfront red with their 10km Red Cape Run on Monday, March 30.

Starting at 17:30 from outside Tiger’s Milk at Suncoast Casino and running along the promenade, the superhero run will open for registration at 16:00. Community Chest’s Fadeela Deedat encouraged runners to join them for the event at a donation price of R100 which will go toward the NPO’s various projects.

“Some of the runners will be running in our signature red superhero cape. For those joining us for the run, we will be loaning out red capes which are limited to 70,” said Deedat.

“So, if you do not have a red cape you are welcome to join us for the 10km run. It is a fun event and a fundraising initiative that will be going towards a good cause.”

Last year, Community Chest’s Race4Charity Superheroes raised a staggering R1 000 754 for the Morningside and Pietermaritzburg-based NPO. The runners raised the funds through sponsorship by running the Comrades.

Executive director of Community Chest Durban Gordon McDonald said, “We always start slow and thankfully finish strong, and this can only be achieved with much effort and generosity from many.”

Mahesh Ratanjee, who raised an impressive R320 000 last year and was awarded the title of Top Charity Fundraiser, called on runners to be part of Monday’s 10km run and to support the NPO.

“It has been my honour to run my Comrades with a greater purpose. I would like to encourage runners who are taking on the Comrades Marathon 2026, to sign up on Race4Charity, for Community Chest,” said Ratanjee.
