Enjoy the soft sounds of isicathamiya

The Isicathamiya Competition will showcase the best of the province's isicathamiya groups.

Immerse yourself in the uniquely South African harmonies of isicathamiya music at The Playhouse Company as it hosts the 16th Annual Iscathamiya Competition.

This popular traditional festival has become a red letter date on the Arts and Culture calendar for Durban and KwaZulu-Natal, attracting some of the best isicathamiya groups from across the province.

A total of 118 groups competed in the preliminary competitions which took place in 13 districts.

The competition is split into two categories: the champions category consists of 24 groups includes returning favourites Zamani Home Boys and Xolo Home Boys, while the standard category has 26 groups competing. The winning group will, once again, in addition to the cash prize, receive a goat.

This year’s festival also includes a fashion extravaganza showcased by 36 oSwenka and 24 oNobuhle contestants competing for cash prizes.

As per tradition, the competition runs throughout the night and promises entertainment for young and old to experience this timeless art form made famous by the likes of Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

The festival is on Saturday 28 September 2013 at 8pm.
