Guitarist performs at KZNSA
Guitarist, Derek Gripper returns to KZN, and will perform at KZNSA Gallery.
BRILLIANT guitarist, Derek Gripper, will perform at KZNSA Gallery, 166 Bulwer Road, Glenwood, on Saturday 11 October at 6pm.
Gripper's last visit to KZN saw him accompanied by world renowned tabla master and student of Ravi Shankar, Udai Muzamdar, in 2011. Since this visit Derek has been busy redefining the nature of classical guitar, most notably in his release of an album called One Night on Earth late in 2012.
It was the first time a classically trained guitarist had tackled the repertoire of the West African harp called the kora. Interpreting the compositions of kora players like Toumani Diabaté, Ballaké Sissoko, Sekou Batourou Kouyaté and Amadu Bansang Jobarteh, Derek created a new form of guitar music and a new take on one of Africa’s most enchanting musical traditions. The UK’s top world music publication Songlines Magazine called One Night on Earth ”a staggering achievement,” selecting the recording as a Top of the World album in March 2013.
The reception of One Night on Earth has led to invites to play in the US, UK, Turkey, Sweden, Norway, Holland, Switzerland, Denmark, France, Ireland, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and of course in Derek’s home of South Africa.
KZNSA Gallery and iSupport have partnered with City Soirée on this event to utilise their crowd funding tool and as soon as enough fans pledge, the concert can go ahead. A pledge is like a pre-sale ticket but with the difference that it has the power to make amazing shows possible and should the target not be reached everyone will get their money back. Pledge at: https://www.citysoiree.co.za/events/derek-gripper-at-kznsa-gallery/
Tickets are R80 before the pledge and R100 after.
