A Christmas celebration

A Christmas show to remember will be hosted at The Playhouse this December.

TO put you in the festive mood this year, The Playhouse Company will host a Christmas Celebration that's filled with live music and entertainment by some of the most accomplished singers, dancers and musicians in the country, from 19 to 21 December.

The line-up of artists signed up to perform are a virtual Who's Who of the South African music industry, including Judith Sephuma, a celebrity artist generally known for her top selling jazz albums. She has collaborated on recordings with such well known international stars as Michael Bolton, Ringo Madlingozi, Oliver Mtukudzi, Pastor Benjamin Dube and DJ Pepsi.

Also on the programme is Soweto-born singer, Tim Moloi, whose love for music and flair for infusing familiar and beloved standards with a new freshness has made him a firm favourite with audiences throughout South Africa, He has performed with orchestras in four provinces and the Soweto Gospel Choi. He will be remembered for his performance of the song “Hope” at the opening ceremony of the FIFA 2010 World Cup at Soccer City.

Another performer needs no introduction to the South African music industry is Bongani Tembe, widely regarded as one of Africa's leading professional opera singers and arts administrators. He has performed in many parts of the world and has contributed positively to the arts and culture environment in South Africa and internationally.

A local favourite is Durban-born soprano, Lauren Dasappa, a dynamic musical artist who has performed several operatic roles and has appeared with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra on numerous occasions. She has also excelled as an actress and singer of popular music.

Actress, singer and dancer, Nondumiso Tembe, who is now well on her way to becoming one of Africa's brightest international stars, will also perform. She is a well-known face on South African television and among her numerous accolades was the distinction of singing for Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday celebrations at his home in Qunu.

Master of ceremonies for the concert is Damon Beard.

Throw in some daring trapeze acts, the sheer artistry of the Playhouse Dance Residency, the delightful harmonies of a massed choir of more than 100 singers and the accompaniment of the famed KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra and you have the makings of dazzling concert for the whole family to celebrate the festive season.

Show times for A Christmas Celebration are 7.30pm for 19 and 20 December and 3pm for 21 December.
