Jazz in ‘The Offering’
Distinctive jazz pianist, Thandi Ntuli, will visit Durban as part of her 'The Offering' tour.
PIANIST, singer and composer, Thandi Ntuli, launched her album 'The Offering' in September 2014 in Johannesburg, and will be at The Jazzy Rainbow, 93 Smiso Nkwanyana (Goble) Road, Durban on Saturday, 21 February at 7pm.
Her music has always been an expression of conflicts which she experienced in her everyday life – the conflict of an African in a Western world, a woman in a man's world, a privately schooled underprivileged black girl who identifies with bits of many cultures and yet is concerned with the endangered nature of African heritage.
Thandi started playing the piano at the age of four, but it was only after getting her distinction in her Grade 8 UNISA Piano Exam that she decided to become a professional musician, and went on to study at The University of Cape Town to attain a BMus in Jazz Performance. In 2008 she was offered a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Among many of her achievements she counts her nominations for an Mbokodo Award in 2014 for the category 'Women in Jazz', and her nomination for a Metro FM award for the category 'Urban Jazz', as two of her greatest.
Another that stands out is performing alongside Selaelo Selota as a supporting act for the internationally-acclaimed saxophonist, Kenny G.
She performed on various local and international stages including The Cape Town International Jazz Festival, The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz, The Grahamstown Youth Jazz Festival, The Calabar International Jazz Festival in Nigeria, The Arts Alive festival and many more.
An accomplished band will be joining Ntuli on stage during her tour with some of Durban’s own talents: firstly established Durban-born, Johannesburg-based vocalist Spha Mdlalose, and bassist Dalisu Ndlazi, who is currently a music student at UKZN. On tenor saxophone will be Sisonke Xonti and on guitar Keenan Ahrends.
