Musical feast at Rhumbelow
There will be something for everyone at the music festival at Rhumbelow Theatre this month.
THERE'S a feast of musical entertainment on offer at Rhumbelow Theatre in Cunningham Avenue, Umbilo, from Friday 24 April to Monday 27 April.
The fun kicks off on Friday 24 April at 8pm with More than Nothing – A Latino Journey. The magic of this show transports the audience to places where wine is consumed under grape vines while domino and card games are played, the old men of the Buena Vista Social Club reign supreme. It’s soulful, sexy and sassy, giving people the opportunity to leave their inhibitions at the door, grab a partner or just sit happily tapping their toes.
On Saturday 25 April at 1.30pm it's the turn of The Story of Rockabilly. If you are into old school rock and roll, then Mazirlou and the Rockabilly Rebels, Durban’s newest rockabilly band Andy Turrell, Marion Loudon, Jill Murraybrown and Francois Hardy is just for you. Formed in 2014 by ace guitarist Andy Turrell, it includes the dynamic Marion Loudon on vocals, the talented Jill Murraybrown on bass guitar as well as trying her hand on the upright bass, and the legendary Francois Hardy on drums and vocals.
At 8pm on Saturday 25 April you can watch, And Still we Rise with the band’s Colin Peddie, DJ, drum pads, keyboard and vocals, lead singer Kerry Wood, and Simon Hampton on guitars. Rise has entertained at the Durban Botanic Gardens, Mr Price Pro,
World cup Rugby launch, Smoking Dragon Festival, Mkuze Cricket tournament, Durban July and many clubs and events around SA.
On Sunday 26 April at 1.30pm the Lyra Lounge: Aural Alchemy goes on stage with Chris Vale and Neil Krog. An afternoon in the company of two consummate performers, Lyra Lounge’s Aural Alchemy is a journey through jazz and musicals that mesmerises.
At 6.30pm on Sunday 26 April, Durban's acclaimed alternative pop artist Rowan Stuart will make his debut performance on the stages of the Rhumbelow Theatre accompanied by Andy Turrell on bass guitar. Rowan will paint a sonic landscape of alternative pop music, incorporating elements of folk, pop, blues and world music into a sound that is both deep and authentic.
On Monday 27 April at 1.30pm, enjoy All That Jazz – We Love to Play, with Beat-route – Daniel Sheldon on trumpet, flugel horn and percussion, Gerald Sloan on guitar and vocals, Logan Byrne on upright bass, Devon Hore on drums and percussion and featuring special guests Zoe Masuku on vocals, Tom Hare on saxes, trumpet, flugel horn and percussion. Beat-Route is one of KZNs busiest and most firmly established professional swing jazz acst.
At 6.30pm on the same day, you can Celebrate Our Jazz Heritage with the Melvin Peters Trio – Melvin Peters on piano, Ildo Nandja on bass and Bruce Baker on drums.The Melvin Peters trio will pay homage to various musicians who have composed music based on their experiences during these oppressive times, most notably Duke Ellington and Oscar Petersen who represent the American jazz tradition, and Abdullah Ibrahim and Winston Mankunku who represent the South African jazz landscape.
The venue opens 90 minutes before each show for a picnic dinner. Take food picnic baskets. Braais will be available should you wish to cook some meat.
