Watch: ‘Captain Hook’ the seal recovering in Durban after bait-stealing ordeal

A Cape fur seal rescued at Amanzimtoti Beach is recovering after swallowing a hook while repeatedly stealing bait.

A young Cape fur seal nicknamed Captain Hook was rescued at Amanzimtoti Beach on Friday after repeatedly stealing bait and becoming entangled in fishing hooks.

South Coast Sun reports one of the hooks was lodged in his throat.

He is now recovering at uShaka Sea World in Durban, where vets are treating his injuries.

“Thankfully, he still has a good appetite, but at least now his sardines don’t come at the end of a line,” said Ann Kunz of the SA Association for Marine Biological Research.

Officials have warned the public never to approach seals, as they can carry rabies.
