Watch: Cape fur seal rescued in Amanzimtoti

After repeatedly stealing bait from fishermen, a hook became lodged in his throat.

A YOUNG Cape fur seal nicknamed Captain Hook was rescued at Amanzimtoti Beach on July 4, after repeatedly stealing bait and becoming entangled in fishing hooks. One of the hooks was found lodged in his throat.

He is now recovering at uShaka Sea World in Durban, where vets are treating his injuries.

“Thankfully, he still has a good appetite, but at least now his sardines don’t come at the end of a line,” said Ann Kunz of the SA Association for Marine Biological Research.
