Members of the EMPD Speed Enforcement and Overload Control unit arrested 35 drivers for various traffic offences in Boksburg and Germiston over the weekend.
According to metro spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng, in Boksburg on Friday traffic law enforcers arrested a 40-year-old man they caught driving his Toyota Hilux at 175km/h in a 100km/h zone on the R21 freeway. He allegedly told police he resorted to speeding as he was running late for an appointment.
Within the same stretch of road between Griffiths on-ramp and N12 off-ramp, officers caught another driver, a 42-year-old, clocking 163km/h in the 100km/h zone.
The two motorists were taken to the Boksburg North Police Station, where they were both charged with reckless and negligent driving.
The other 33 motorists were also arrested over the weekend for allegedly driving while being intoxicated along President and Jones streets in Germiston.
“After failing the sobriety tests, the drivers were handcuffed and taken to the Germiston Police Station, where they were formally charged. During the operations, all Covid-19 protocols were followed,” said Mokheseng.
All the arrested suspects are expected to appear in their respective courts.
