A community member, who wished to remain anonymous, recently raised concerns that the condition of the walkways at Andries Scribante Haven in Cason could pose a danger to the elderly residents of the metro-owned flats.
According to the member of the public, whose mother-in-law lives at Andries Scribante, concrete is breaking down from the roof.
“Large pieces of concrete will eventually fall on pensioners while they’re walking to their flats. Pieces have already broken off, and people don’t always look up and notice the potential danger,” the community member said.

He pointed out that one mine tremor might be all it takes to dislodge a big chunk of concrete.
“I have read in the past about a walkway bridge collapsing over a road and a structure collapsing at a school. People didn’t even think it could happen, but it did,” he pointed out.
One of the residents at the flats, Marietjie Gouws, said the issue has been ongoing for a few years now.
“I have been living here for eight years and it has never been repaired. It is a really big problem. One of the residents was nearly injured after a piece of cement fell from the roof and landed next to her,” Gouws said.
She highlighted the issue is affecting the entire building and has been reported to the metro on numerous occasions.
The Advertiser is still awaiting comment from the metro.
