The Department of Human Settlements responded to an anonymous community member’s concern about the walkways at Andries Scribante Haven that are in a dire state.
According to the member of the public, whose mother-in-law lives at Andries Scribante, concrete is breaking down from the roofs of the metro-owed building’s walkways.
“Large pieces of concrete will eventually fall on pensioners while they’re walking to their flats. Pieces have already broken off, and people don’t always look up and notice the potential danger,” the community member said.
According to Nhlanhla Cebekhulu, the metro’s divisional head of communications and media relations, the metro is aware of the problem.
“The building has been identified for an engineering conditional assessment and refurbishment programme for the 2021/2022 financial year,” he said in a statement.
One of the residents at the flats, Marietjie Gouws, said the condition of the walkways has been in a bad condition for a few years now.
When asked why it is taking the metro so long to fix the problem, Cebekhulu replied: “Requests for repairs and maintenance are attended to speedily; however, delays are encountered in the event of budgetary constraints.”
