Award recognises committed officer
The award recognises Warrant Officer Eva Mathunyane’s commitment to supporting police officers through some of their most challenging times, bringing attention to the often-overlooked mental and emotional needs of those in law enforcement.
Warrant Officer Eva Mathunyane from the Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) Unit recently won the woman of the year title at the Ekurhuleni District Excellence Awards 2023/2024 held at Hoërskool Jeugland in Kempton Park.
The award recognises her commitment to supporting police officers through some of their most challenging times, bringing attention to the often-overlooked mental and emotional needs of those in law enforcement.
Mathunyane, a social worker, is part of the trauma and counselling services team within the EHW, working across SAPS stations in Dawn Park, Brakpan and Reiger Park.
She collaborates with a network of social workers, psychologists and pastoral caregivers to ensure officers receive compassionate and comprehensive mental health support.

“At EHW, we work as a united team. Together, social workers, psychologists and pastors are always ready to support our police members, helping them work through trauma with counselling,” she said.
As someone familiar with dedication, Mathunyane also reached new personal heights through her involvement in the Mrs South Africa pageant, where she was honoured as a semi-finalist.
Although she did not make the finals, her participation encouraged her to seize new opportunities and apply for the excellence awards.
“When I saw the opportunity with the excellence awards, I thought, ‘Maybe I do qualify’, and applied. Yet the journey was not without difficulties.
“There were moments when I felt discouraged, but I kept pushing through,” Mathunyane said.
She said winning the award filled her with pride and a renewed sense of purpose.
“It was the first time I applied. It feels wonderful to have won. Knowing my work makes a difference, and seeing it recognised at this level is truly fulfilling,” said Mathunyane.
