The Sennelo family is heartbroken over the loss of Retshegofetse (16), a learner at Krugersdorp High School (KHS).
He died after sustaining injuries during a cricket match at Christian Brothers’ College (CBC) in Boksburg on February 1.
The tragedy occurred during a first XI cricket match between KHS and CBC when a ball was struck into the outfield, leading to a collision between two KHS players as they attempted to field it.
According to reports, emergency medical personnel from Mibern Emergency Medical Services, who were present at the match, quickly attended to the injured players.
Despite their efforts, Retshegofetse’s condition deteriorated rapidly. He lost consciousness and suffered cardiac arrest while being transported to Netcare Sunward Park Hospital.
Despite undergoing emergency surgery upon arrival, he succumbed to internal injuries.
The other player was treated for concussion and later released from hospital in Krugersdorp.
Retshegofetse’s uncle, Joe Mabuela, said the tragic incident occurred while they were in Bloemfontein accompanying Retshegofetse’s older brother to the University of Free State for accommodation.
“We had to send family members to attend to the incident. We returned the same day and came back with sad news.
“We are very saddened; this has impacted us very badly. The mom still cannot believe what happened. Being a single mother, this has affected her deeply.”
The Grade 12 learner was the second-born of two children and was known for being reserved and quiet, enjoying jokes and being the comedian of the family.
According to Mabuela, Retshegofetse cherished his faith and loved playing cricket.
CBC headmaster Toby Craig expressed profound sorrow over the incident.
“Our deepest condolences are extended to his family, friends and the entire Krugersdorp High School community.”
He also assured that all CBC players involved would receive counselling and support during this difficult time.

In a statement shared by KHS, deep condolences were expressed to Retshegofetse’s family, including his brother Gomolemo and SGB chairperson Olga Sennelo.
“Grief counsellors will be available to support students affected by this tragedy starting Monday (February 3).”
Retshegofetse Sennelo will be laid to rest at Kagiso Cemetery in Krugersdorp on February 8, with the funeral service commencing at 07:00.
