Brandon Edmunds makes national team

Boksburg’s Brandon Edmunds qualifies for World Baseball Classic

Boksburg Cardinals’ very own Brandon Edmunds has secured a spot on the South African national baseball team for the prestigious World Baseball Classic (WBC) Qualifiers.

The tournament will take place in Taiwan from February 21 to 25, bringing together top baseball nations in a fierce battle for qualification.

Edmunds, 36, boasts an impressive baseball career spanning 25 years. His journey began with T-ball at the old Boksburg Cardinals at PG Park, where he first fell in love with the sport.

Reflecting on his early years, he shared, “I made my first provincial team at the age of 12 and have played at a provincial level ever since.”

This is not Edmunds’ first appearance on the international stage. In 2022, he proudly represented South Africa in the World Baseball Classic Qualifiers held in Germany.

Now, he is ready to don the green and gold once again, determined to make his mark on one of the world’s most prestigious baseball tournaments.

“It’s such an honour to be able to represent my country again in one of the biggest international baseball tournaments.

“It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to make this team and wearing green and gold is always an amazing dream come true.”

Aside from his own playing career, Edmunds is deeply involved in nurturing young talent.

He serves as one of the U15A coaches for the Boksburg Cardinals, where he played a pivotal role in leading his team to a triumphant season last year, clinching both the league and the cup.

Boksburg Cardinals’ Janine Watkins praised Edmunds for his commitment to the sport both on and off the field.
“We are proud of Brandon for achieving this amazing opportunity and we wish him everything of the best,” she said.
