WATCH: Local believes a cleaner Van Dyk Park is a safer Van Dyk Park
Johan Erasmus is leading a community initiative to clean up overgrown grass and litter in Van Dyk Park, earning praise from locals for his dedication to improving the neighbourhood’s beauty and safety.
Johan Erasmus of Van Dyk Park took the initiative to beautify the neighbourhood by tackling the overgrown grass and litter that had plagued the area for some time.
The initiative, which started with a post shared on the Boksburg Community Group, caught the attention of residents, who praised Erasmus for his dedication to improving the environment. He began the initiative on May 4.
Noticing the deteriorating condition of Van Dyk Park, Erasmus shared his concerns, emphasising the area had lost its beauty because of the neglected state of the grass and the increasing amount of litter.

He also highlighted the potential security risks of the overgrown vegetation.
“Van Dyk Park is a beautiful place, and we cannot just sit here and wait for the municipality to clean the area. We all know that the city will say there is no money. Why not do it ourselves?” he said.

A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, commended Erasmus for his selfless efforts.
“He has given his time to clean the area, and we are delighted as a community. We decided that, per household, we will contribute because he is doing this from his heart. This is his business, and we can help by contributing in any way we can.
“The overgrown grass has posed a safety hazard, particularly at night, with residents unable to see across the street because of the high grass. You don’t know what might come out of the bush.
“There have been hijackings and house burglaries in the past, and this is a relief for us.”

Erasmus praised Simangele Sabe, the area’s councillor, for her ongoing support.
“She is hands-on and always attends to our pleas. She is always on board with our efforts,” said Erasmus, adding that a clean-up will now take place monthly.
He pleads for more residents to get on board, unite, and keep the area clean.
“We can only do this when unified.”
He thanked the community members who supported him throughout the initiative. To support the initiative, contact Erasmus on 071 609 9959.
