Sharney launches foundation to uplift cancer patients
Having been dismissed by doctors during her own health crisis, Sharney stressed the importance of self-advocacy.
At just 31 years old, Sharney Blackway from Delmore Gardens has survived breast cancer twice and is now using her experience to help others.
After facing two life-threatening battles before the age of 30, Sharney has launched the Sharney Blackway Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting women fighting cancer, particularly those who cannot afford medical care.
“My survival wasn’t just a second chance, it was a calling. I created this foundation to be a bridge between diagnosis and hope, especially for those who feel unseen in our healthcare system.”
Having been dismissed by doctors during her own health crisis, Sharney stresses the importance of self-advocacy.
“Early detection saves lives, and you know your body best. Don’t allow doctors to gaslight you, keep seeking help until you are heard and get answers that resonate with what your body is telling you.”

Giving back with purpose
Registered in April 2025, the foundation offers a wide range of programmes: care packages and wigs for chemotherapy patients, toy and beautify drives for children, round-table wellness discussions, and multimedia cancer awareness campaigns. It also runs a multilingual cancer helpline and a six-language AI-powered tutor bot to support patients in rural and underserved communities.

Sharney is supported by her husband and caregiver, Rowayne Blackway, who serves as treasurer, and Rochel Jacobs, programme and operations lead. Together, the team is deeply committed to restoring dignity, raising awareness and making life easier for cancer patients navigating difficult journeys.

“This foundation is for every woman crying in silence, every family burdened by medical bills and every person who’s been told their pain isn’t real,” said Blackway.
Upcoming event
To celebrate her journey and inspire others, Sharney and her husband will host a special thanksgiving event on June 1 at the Boksburg Birchwood Hotel.
The event invites the community to “join a young married couple who has had to fight many trials at a young age to rise above their circumstances and celebrate life.”
More than just a celebration, the event is a heartfelt call to action. Proceeds and awareness raised will support the foundation’s mission to care for cancer patients in need. “We’ve turned our pain into purpose. Now we use our platform to give back.”

With over 100 000 social media followers and a growing voice as a motivational speaker and activist, she uses her story to uplift others.
“I want people to know that light still exists in the darkest moments. Your voice matters. Your story matters. And you’re never alone.”
