Women in uniform crack down on crime in Boksburg

A co-ordinated effort by female officers and other law officials targeted crime along Barry Marais Road, leading to arrests linked to contact crimes, gender-based violence, and more.

Women in law enforcement arrested 256 suspects during Operation Basadi along Barry Marais Road, between Villa Liza and Dawn Park.

The operation took place on August 6 and 7 and was aimed at tackling crime while empowering women in uniform through a co-ordinated roadblock and joint effort.
Spokesperson of Dawn Park SAPS, Sergeant Nkemeleng Mabula said the operation was part of the national Operation Shanela. Female officers from SAPS, Metro Police, Gauteng Traffic, Gauteng Wardens, Home Affairs, Correctional Services, CPF, and other agencies worked together to target crime hotspots.

“Operation Basadi focused on fighting crime and supporting women in law enforcement,” Mabula said.
“On the first day, detectives arrested 237 suspects wanted for various crimes: 155 for contact crimes, 19 for contact-related crimes, 12 for property crimes, 50 for other serious offences, and 43 linked to gender-based violence. Crime Intelligence officers also arrested a suspect for drugs and confiscated 12 containers of diesel.

“The following day, Ekurhuleni District Commissioner Major General Anna Sithole led the operation in Dawn Park. Police arrested 12 undocumented immigrants, two suspects for drug possession, one for dealing in dagga, and five people for selling alcohol without licences.
“Officers issued fines for non-compliance related to second-hand goods, impounded four vehicles, and handed out 16 traffic fines worth R5 800.”

Mabula said Social Crime Prevention teams and other partners visited homes in Dawn City during the operation.
“They raised awareness about house robberies and distributed safety pamphlets to motorists to help prevent car hijackings.
“Residents of Mapleton Ext 10 also took part in a community imbizo where they spoke directly to police officers about local policing concerns.”

Sithole praised the commitment and teamwork of all women involved.
“The continued dedication of these women, alongside our supporting departments, is making a real impact in reducing crime across Ekurhuleni,” she said.
