Police warn residents to watch out for scams

Reiger Park Police are urging residents to stay vigilant as scammers continue targeting the community.

Reiger Park residents are being warned that financial fraud and online scams remain a persistent threat in the community.

Spokesperson of the Reiger Park Police Station, Constable Johannes Msimanga, emphasised that despite ongoing awareness campaigns, scammers continue to target unsuspecting residents.
“Fraudsters are constantly changing their tactics. This isn’t a problem of the past; it’s happening right now in our community. We have received many reports of residents being tricked into giving away money or personal information.”

Recent incidents reported to the station include cellphone calls from people pretending to be bank officials, fake online investment schemes, and social media scams.
“One elderly resident reportedly lost thousands after responding to a phishing email claiming to be from a local bank. These scams have serious consequences and people often suffer both financially and emotionally.”

The Reiger Park Police and CPF have intensified awareness campaigns, including workshops and community alert groups. Residents are being urged to verify all calls, emails, or messages requesting banking details and to report suspicious activity immediately.

Msimanga stressed that education and vigilance are the community’s first line of defence.
“We teach residents to recognise red flags: urgent requests for money, unverified links, or calls from unknown numbers claiming to be officials. Working together, we can prevent more people from falling victim.”

Resident Thandiwe Khumalo shared her experience. “I received a call from someone claiming to be my bank asking for account verification. I remembered the police advice and didn’t give any details. I reported it immediately. Their guidance helped me avoid losing money.”

Msimanga reminded residents that fraud affects all age groups and backgrounds. He urged everyone to share tips with neighbours and participate in community awareness initiatives.
“Fraud is evolving, but so is our response. By staying informed, reporting suspicious activity, and supporting one another, we can protect these ongoing threats.”

Five fraud and scam prevention tips:
1. Verify all calls and messages. Always confirm the identity of anyone claiming to be from a bank, government office, or service provider.

2. Never share personal or banking information. Do not give out passwords, PINs, or OTP codes to anyone, even if they claim to be official.

3. Be cautious online. Avoid clicking on unknown links or attachments from emails, WhatsApp, or social media.

4. Monitor your accounts regularly. Check bank statements and transaction alerts frequently and report suspicious activity immediately.

5. Report suspicious activity promptly. Contact Reiger Park Police Station or your local CPF to help prevent further fraud.
