Dawn Park SAPS raises the alarm on surge in dating scams
It is alleged that this alarming trend involves sophisticated con artists, who are foreigners, who employ deceptive tactics to exploit vulnerable individuals seeking romantic relationships.
In response to a concerning rise in dating fraud scams that predominantly target women, the Dawn Park SAPS hosted an awareness campaign at the Dawn Park Shopping Centre on August 24.
According to Sergeant Nkemeleng Mabula, spokesperson for the Dawn Park Police Station, the event aimed to inform the public about the sophisticated tactics used by scammers, who often pose as potential romantic partners to exploit their victims financially.
“These scammers typically initiate contact with their victims in public spaces, especially at shopping centres.
“They approach women under the pretense of wanting to form a romantic relationship.
“This initial interaction is often carefully orchestrated, with the scammers assessing their targets based on visible indicators of wealth and lifestyle.”
Mabula said the con artists are adept at identifying potential victims by observing their attire and the type of vehicle they drive.
“Women who appear to be financially stable or successful in their careers are particularly at risk, as these scammers are looking for individuals they believe they can manipulate for financial gain.

“Once a connection is established, the scammers work to build trust with their victims, often presenting themselves as charming and affluent individuals.
“They usually wear expensive luxurious clothing, which adds to their credibility and allure,” said Mabula.
As the relationship develops, the scammers employ psychological manipulation tactics to exert control over their victims.
“After you have agreed to be in a relationship with them, they begin to control you. This often escalates to the point where victims are encouraged to leave their jobs and withdraw their retirement savings, with promises of significant financial returns.”
In a typical scenario, the scammers take their victims to a location where they showcase a large sum of money, claiming that if the victim retires and invests their funds with them, they will become wealthy.
“This tactic is designed to create a sense of urgency and excitement, leading victims to believe they are on the brink of a life-changing opportunity.
“However, the reality is far more sinister. Once the victims hand over their money, the scammers vanish without a trace, leaving their victims devastated and financially ruined,” the spokesperson warned.
Mabula emphasised the importance of awareness.
“People should be aware of their surroundings and report suspicious behavior.”
The police offered these tips:
• Stay informed: Educate yourself about common scams and the tactics used by fraudsters.
• Be cautious: Exercise caution when engaging with new acquaintances, especially those who display signs of financial manipulation or make extravagant promises.
• Trust your instincts: If something feels off in a relationship, trust your instincts and seek advice from friends or family.
• Report suspicious activity: If you encounter someone who exhibits suspicious behavior or attempts to manipulate you financially, report it to the local authorities immediately.
“Take charge. Safety starts with you. Don’t be silent about scamming. Report it to your nearest police station. And remember, don’t blame yourself – real men protect women,” Mabula concluded.
