Boksburg Brownies recently enjoyed a lively and adventure-filled experience at the It’s a Bug’s Life event at the Blue Forest Girl Guides premises in Rynfield, Benoni.

The event brought together enthusiastic young members for a full day of hands-on fun, outdoor exploration and creative activities designed to spark curiosity about the natural world.

Leader Colleen Walker said the camp aimed to give the girls a chance to learn through play while building confidence and teamwork.
“The programme included a bug-hunting activity where the Brownies searched the garden for beetles, worms and other tiny creatures, guided by leaders who helped them understand the value of nature and environmental awareness. Bright paints and craft stations kept the girls busy as they created colourful bug-themed artwork to take home.”

Walker said that adding to the excitement, the slip ’n slide and inflatable obstacle castle quickly became highlights of the day, offering endless laughter as the girls took turns racing, sliding and bouncing through the course.
“Later, the Brownies made their own pizzas, an activity that blended enjoyment with a sense of independence as each child personalised her own meal.”

Walker expressed how proud they were of the girls’ enthusiasm and participation throughout the camp.
“Events like these give the Brownies a chance to learn new skills, make friends and enjoy the outdoors in a safe and supportive environment,” she said.

The Brownies unit in Parkdene meets every Monday at 17:00 at the Guide Hall where girls continue to take part in crafts, outdoor skills, community projects and character-building activities throughout the year.
