SHINE kicks off 2026 literacy programme at Lakeside and Goede Hoop school

The organisation has launched its 2026 literacy initiative in Boksburg, helping primary school learners improve reading and writing skills.

SHINE has recently launched its 2026 literacy programme in Boksburg, a community initiative aimed at improving reading and writing skills among primary school learners.

Michael Zietsman, director of the organisation, said literacy remains one of South Africa’s greatest educational challenges, with nearly 80% of children unable to read and write at the expected level by Grade 4.

“This gap not only affects learning across all subjects but also limits future opportunities for further study and employment.

“The programme has already started at Lakeside Primary and Goede Hoop Primary, where SHINE’s team of 45 volunteers, supported by 19 paid youth facilitators, is working with learners to strengthen their literacy skills.”

He said that through structured reading sessions, the children gain the ability to read with understanding, write clearly, and engage confidently in the classroom.

“Beyond literacy, the programme also helps build self-esteem, independence, and a love for learning, setting children on a path to academic success and personal growth.”

Zietsman added that the foundation’s vision extends beyond the literacy centre. In the long term, they aim to establish a literacy programme in all four primary schools in the Reiger Park area, enabling the initiative to reach more than 1 200 children each year.

“Achieving this goal requires the involvement of the broader community.”

He added that residents can volunteer even as little as one hour per week to make a meaningful difference in a young learner’s life.

“Local businesses are also encouraged to support financially. With Section 18A status, donations offer tax benefits through SARS while directly contributing to improving literacy outcomes in the community.

“At its core, we believe that quality education is a key tool for addressing inequality in South Africa. Strong literacy skills unlock doors to further education, career opportunities, and the ability to contribute positively to families and communities.”
