WATCH: Inspire Us empowers the next generation of young women

This was our first girls' workshop, but certainly not our last.

Girls from primary and high schools across Reiger Park gathered on July 4 for the first Inspire Us Girls Empowerment workshop, a day dedicated to equipping young women with the confidence, knowledge and life skills to navigate their futures.

Hosted by Julie Whitecomb-Abdul, founder of the registered NPO Inspire Us, the workshop marked a new chapter for the organisation, which has spent years mentoring women, hosting empowerment workshops and visiting schools to inspire positive change.

While Inspire Us has become known for its work with women in the community, Saturday’s event was the organisation’s first workshop dedicated specifically to girls.

Throughout the day, participants took part in interactive activities, discussions, and presentations focused on emotional wellness, identity, discipline, communication, health, purpose, and leadership.

The programme also included fun icebreakers and opportunities for the girls to connect with one another in a safe and encouraging environment.

Whitecomb-Abdul said the workshop was created to remind young girls that they have value, purpose and the ability to shape their own futures.

“This was our first girls’ workshop, but certainly not our last. We want every girl to leave knowing that her circumstances do not determine her future. She has purpose, potential and a voice that deserves to be heard.”

Among the speakers was Dr Agatha Wilhase, who addressed the girls on health and well-being, encouraging them to take care of both their physical and emotional health as they grow into young women.

“Eating well and exercising is important, especially because you guys are still young and have every ability to be active. I urge all of you to engage in sports.” She said

Wilhase also made the girls aware of how their bodies will change and what they should be expecting.

For many of the girls, the workshop offered more than information; it gave them a space to be heard, to be encouraged, and to be inspired.

“I am so happy to be part of this workshop today. I am learning a lot of things, and I am looking forward to attending the many coming workshops,” said Hope Tsokolibane, one of the girls who attended.

Whitecomb-Abdul said this was only the beginning, with Inspire Us hoping to host many more workshops that will empower girls across local communities.

She thanked the facilitators, volunteers, sponsors, parents and supporters whose contributions made the inaugural event possible.

The first of many Inspire Us girls' workshops was a success.

“Our goal is to invest in the next generation of young women. When we empower girls, we strengthen families, communities and our future,” she said.
