SAPS take illegal gun off streets

The Dawn Park SAPS’ Crime Prevention Unit officers arrested a suspect they found with a stolen firearm in Mapleton Ext 10.

While on patrol in Mapleton Ext 10 recently, the Dawn Park SAPS’ Crime Prevention Unit officers arrested a 46-year-old man for possessing a stolen firearm.

The spokesperson for the Dawn Park SAPS, Sergeant Nkemeleng Mabula, said the officers stopped a suspicious silver VW Polo and searched the driver, discovering the firearm in his possession.

“Officers asked him to produce a firearm license, which he did, but it did not match the firearm’s serial number.

“Officers took the suspect to the Dawn Park Police Station. Upon further investigation, it was found that the firearm was reported stolen and did not belong to the suspect.

“The firearm will be subjected to ballistic examination to determine if it was used in the commission of any crimes. The suspect was detained and will appear at Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court soon,” said Mabula.
