Zama zamas force closure of Weltevreden landfill site

Members of the EMPD are deployed to monitor the situation.

The City of Ekurhuleni has announced the temporary closure of the Weltevreden landfill site near Brakpan, owing to a gun battle among rival illegal mining gangs.

According to metro spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, the facility has been shut down after a shootout ensued among illegal miners.

Members of the EMPD are deployed to monitor the situation closely.

“No injuries have been detected and the EMPD remain on high alert. Members of the public are urged to avoid the area as the situation remains volatile.

“Patrons are advised to use nearby landfill sites such as the Rietfontein site in KwaThema and the Rooikraal site in Dawn Park, Boksburg,” said Dlamini.

The city apologises for the inconvenience this may cause and undertakes to keep the public up to date with developments.
