Man (53) fatally shot in Witfield

Police are appealing to anyone with information to come forward

Police have launched a murder investigation following the fatal shooting of a 53-year-old man in Solomon Road, Witfield, on the evening of August 5.

According to Ekurhuleni SAPS district spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela, the incident occurred at approximately 18:30. The victim, who was walking alone, was allegedly approached by three unknown African males wearing balaclavas.

Upon noticing the suspects, he attempted to flee.

“One of the suspects, armed with a rifle, opened fire on the victim. The victim fell to the ground, and the suspects fled the scene on foot,” said Sekgobela.

Emergency medical services were called to the scene and declared the man dead upon arrival. Several cartridges were recovered at the site.

The motive for the killing remains unknown. Notably, the victim’s wallet and cellphone were still in his possession.

Boksburg North SAPS are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the identification and arrest of the suspects. Anyone with information is urged to contact the station on 011 960 0100 or the SAPS Crime Stop line on 08600 10111.

In a statement, private security company Legendary Guardians Exclusive Protections (LGEP) said this was not an isolated incident.

“Over the past weeks, we’ve seen a disturbing spike in criminal activity, including street robberies, complex break-ins, and house robberies. Witfield is being targeted,” the statement read.

• Stay vigilant – know your surroundings at all times. If something feels off, it probably is.
• Avoid walking alone, especially at night.
• Join your local area WhatsApp security groups.
• Invest in professional security services – whether you live in a complex or a standalone property, the time for ‘it won’t happen to me’ is over.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim. A life lost senselessly is a loss to us all. Let this tragedy not be in vain. Let it awaken a sense of unity, awareness, and action.
