Resident gives learners free hair-dos
The hairdressing student wanted to help the community because she knew some parents could not afford to get their children’s hair done.
Reiger Park resident Cheryl Varrie helped the community’s underprivileged learners get their hair picture-perfect for their return to school on January 17.
Most learners had their hair braided or straightened, which Varrie did at her house for free on January 14 and 15.
While blow-drying a girl’s curly hair, Varrie told the Boksburg Advertiser that helping the children with their hair was her way of giving back to the community.
“I know some people cannot afford to get their child’s hair done, and I wanted to help and share my talent,” said Varrie, a Carlton Hair Academy student.
According to Varrie, the initiative received a great response from the community.
“Some people have been donating shampoo, conditioner, hair ribbons, sweets for the children and even electricity units,” she explained.
The kids stood in line to get their hair done since about 07:00, and over 70 children’s hair was done daily.
“I had to get a few volunteers from the community to assist me,” added Varrie.
When Hanifa Klaassen of Haneef’s Halaal Take Away heard about Varrie’s initiative, she immediately jumped in to assist.
She gave the learners food and offered her premises to do the children’s hair.
Tefflin Smith said she is happy with her now straight and shiny hair.
“I’m very excited. I’m starting high school, and my hair looks nice.”
