SPCA update: Abused doggies recovering well
Duke was found dumped in front of the Boksburg SPCA's gate and Morkie was surrendered with gaping wounds caused by a skin condition.
A greyhound found dumped outside the Boksburg SPCA’s front gate and a surrendered cross-Yorkshire terrier with mange are both well on their way to recovery.
SPCA manager Vicky Finnemore explained Duke, a male greyhound, was found by one of their drivers on the evening of February 21 and assessed by management.
Duke was then taken to the vet for treatment.
“He has open pressure sores on his legs and hips from having to sleep on a hard surface and is covered in scars. His toes are broken and he was extremely dehydrated,” said Finnemore.
Finnemore added it is suspected Duke was a hunting dog.
“This is an old dog, and he’s lived a hard life under the hand of his previous owner,” she added.
Duke is now enjoying a soft bed and warm jersey at the SPCA.
He will be looking for his retirement home as soon as he’s fully recovered.

Morkie, a cross-Yorkshire terrier of about a year, was surrendered to the SPCA on February 23 with gaping wounds on her body.
“The owner told the SPCA she is pregnant and they won’t have time for the animal.
With obvious shock on their faces, our receptionists accepted the broken animal into their arms and watched as the owner drove away,” Finnemore explained.
The manager said Morkie remains at the vet and should be discharged soon. She will then be up for adoption.
Finnemore expressed her gratitude towards members of the community who have been making contributions towards these animals’ medical bills.
“The society appreciates assistance from the public. These are only two of the many neglected animals we’ve taken in this week,” she added.
Those who wish to make a contribution to the society may contact 011 916 5906/7.
