Jump in to help clean up around the old Martin School

The community's support would be much appreciated.

Residents can join a clean-up around the abandoned site of the old Martin School on the corner of Eighth Street and Fifth Avenue, on March 1.

The clean-up session will commence at 08:00.

One of the organisers, Annerie du Pisanie, explained that the clean-up is part of an initiative born from residents’ shared concerns about the safety, cleanliness, and overall well-being of the neighbourhood.

“Recently, a group of residents gathered to discuss local issues, from rising crime and litter to overgrown pavements and open spaces and the challenges posed by the old school building.

“We are engaging with the metro regarding the building, which we believe has become a focal point for illegal activities that contribute to crime and environmental decline

“Our goal is to request a review and, if appropriate, the demolition of this building so that our neighbourhood can thrive in a safer, cleaner environment.”

Annerie said the clean-up day is a fantastic opportunity for the community to work together, not only to enhance surroundings but also to foster stronger community bonds.

“We intend to involve and support local, independent freelance gardeners to help in maintaining and improving our public areas.

“We are also excited to announce that a local business, Rainbow Mica Boksburg Noord, has agreed to donate masks, gloves and a truck to assist with dumping the waste at the nearest disposal site on the clean-up day,” she explained.

How you can help
Du Pisanie said donations in the form of cleaning equipment, such as masks, gloves, black bags and tools, as well as cash contributions to help cover the costs of supplies and local freelance gardeners, would be appreciated.

“Even a small donation can make a big difference in our collective effort.”

The organiser said those who are unable to make a contribution are welcome to volunteer.

“Whether you can spare a few hours or the whole day, your participation is vital.

“Together, we can make our neighbourhood a more pleasant and secure place for everyone.”
