Boksburg SPCA struggles to resolve ongoing Facebook page issue
Members of the community are urged to follow the 'Boksburg SPCA Charity Shop' Facebook page.
After two and a half months, the Boksburg SPCA has still not resolved the issue regarding the suspension of its ‘Boksburg SPCA New’ Facebook page.
The page, which had over 50 000 followers, played an essential role in promoting animal adoptions and fundraising efforts.
Its sudden removal has left the society grappling with the loss of its online presence.
Sue Beadon, the society’s secretary, previously said the suspension stems from a claim of “impersonation” after someone created a page that resembles the original one.
This copycat page reported the Boksburg SPCA to Facebook, leading to the suspension of their official account.
“We’re not sure if it’s an SPCA hater or just random individuals. However, the impact has been severe. We’ve lost a vital platform for advertising our fundraisers and promoting animals up for adoption. It’s been devastating.”
In the meantime, the society is using its ‘Boksburg SPCA Charity Shop’ page.
Although this page has over 4 000 followers it does not provide the same outreach and exposure as their original platform.
Beadon said the SPCA is still in contact with Meta on a daily basis and will decide on the way forward by mid-March if the situation does not improve.
“We’ll keep the community updated and continue to explore all possible avenues,” Beadon concluded.
The Boksburg SPCA calls on the public’s continued support, urging them to follow the ‘Boksburg SPCA Charity Shop’ page.
The Boksburg Advertiser is still awaiting comment from Meta.
