Shavathon forms a united front of support for cancer patients

Cansa expressed its gratitude to all those who supported the initiative.

Old and young turned up to support the CANSA Shavathon at East Rand Mall on May 1.

This was the 23rd edition of the popular fundraiser and this year’s theme was ‘Fearless Hair to Show You Care’.

Those who wanted to support could shave or spray their hair, donate ponytails or contribute monetarily.
The Baanbreker Voortrekkers were among the supporters.

One of their volunteers, Leonora Cilliers, said she was supporting the event in honour of her son, who died of cancer two years ago.

“Our son had stage-four cancer two years ago. Organisations such as CANSA supported us tremendously during this time. They assisted my husband financially and helped him get through it.

“Two years ago, I also shaved my head because it is a great initiative and the organisation does great work.”

An emotional moment unfolded when Boksburg’s Marietjie Kok shaved her hair, as she had done last year.
“It is an honour to do this for people suffering from the disease and also for those who have lost loved ones. I wish more people would support the Shavathon because chemo does not ask for a little bit of hair – it takes all of it.

“I have lost many loved ones to cancer and will shave my hair again to support CANSA’s work.”

The Shavathon was also a sibling bonding opportunity for Maya, Vanita and Vinesh Dajee.

“We have been supporting the event for 14 years as my brother and dad are cancer survivors, and we have also lost friends to cancer.”

Morne Holloway of CANSA thanked the volunteers and those who supported the Shavathon.

“We are grateful the event was a success as we collected over R5 000 and received hair donations.”
